Q: How did you hear about AKP?
A: I was a house parent in NY for three years, when I moved here, I applied to be a house partent. My (past) roles at AKP included House Parent and Medical Transportation, and now I serve as the Academic Supervisor.

Q: Can you explain your role?
A: I create academic plans for all kids on campus, bridging the gap between what they do at school and what we can provide as caregivers. I host enrichment sessions like tutoring and study support to help them reach their academic goals. My goal is to find creative ways to get the kids engaged and invested in their education.

This role is crucial because many of these kids have IEPs (Individualized Education Plans), but since they move around and change schools so often, there’s not always enough data to support them in school alone. I help bridge that gap by coordinating between their in-school education and the services we offer here. Education is the most important thing they can take with them everywhere they go.

Q: How did you get into this role?
A: I’ve always loved education and learning. I saw how it opened doors for me and provided opportunities, and I wanted all children to experience that.

Q: What is your favorite part of your role?
A: When we work on something together, and they feel frustrated, but later they come back excited, saying, “I got it, I got it!”

Q: What is the hardest part?
A: Watching them struggle—especially when they’re trying their best.

Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned as an educator?
A: Students don’t learn from people they don’t like.

Q: What is your favorite memory with the kids in this role?
A: I was working with a student on a math problem, and another student was struggling as well. While I was helping someone else, the first student turned to the second and said, “Hey, let’s work together!” It was a great moment of teamwork and support.

Q: What is your favorite book?
A: Beloved by Toni Morrison.

Q: Beach or mountains?
A: Beach.

Q: If you could only teach one subject, what would it be and why?
A: Math—because it’s satisfying to find a clear answer to something.

Are you recruiting tutors to work with individual elementary kids after school?
I am a retired HCPS teacher and would potentially be interested in helping out?
