May is Foster Care Awareness month, which is somewhat akin to celebrating Mother’s Day one Sunday out of the year when in reality every day is Mother’s Day. Every day Mother is honored in some way for bringing a child into the world and doing everything in her power to raise that child in the best way she knows how. For Foster Care Awareness month, simply choosing May as the month to focus on just doesn’t cut the mustard at A Kid’s Place. EVERY DAY is Foster Care Awareness day here, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Every day we are brought face to face with the realities these children face; they have been removed from their homes and everything that was familiar to them. Whether or not they are better off for it is a moot point, because as far as they know they are in a holding pattern. Will they go back to their family? Will they be placed in another foster home? Will they be adopted by a new family who promise to love them as their own?
There is a gap in the life of every foster child; this is the gap between where they come from and where they’re going. The gap is A Kid’s Place and we must all agree to stand in that gap as a supportive bridge for these children. We might not know what the future holds for them, but we can fill that gap with love and support. Are you willing to stand in the gap?
